What is the Product?

The Chess Club website is an e-commerce platform designed for the growing chess community in Seattle. It serves as an informational asset for the business, where users can find event information, purchase merchandise, and engage with a vibrant, welcoming chess community.
As the UX Designer and Web Builder, I crafted the user experience, information architecture, and retail checkout flow (coining the term Pawn Shop), ensuring responsive design across web and mobile platforms.

The Strategy

During my 10 month contract position with the Chess Club as the Product Designer & Website Builder, I designed and built the first version of the responsive website. As the sole website designer, I created and evolved the full user experience including visual layout, navigation, information architecture, and retail checkout flow.

What was the Problem Being Solved?

Chess Club needed an online presence to expand its community, promote local events, and increase merchandise sales.

The challenge was to design a site that catered to both in-person and online audiences, providing seamless navigation, clear information architecture, and an easy way to order our custom designs from the Pawn Shop to embody the club’s welcoming, inclusive atmosphere.

What was the Project Goal and Impact?

Our goal was to create a user-friendly, scalable e-commerce platform that not only served as an online store for Chess Club merchandise but also acted as a hub for the Seattle chess community. The website balances functionality and design, allowing users to easily access event information, purchase merchandise, and be a part of the welcoming and inclusive chess community.

The impact of the project led to a 30% increase in merchandise sales, grew the community to over 1000 members across six locations, and boosted site traffic to 80+ daily visits with 800+ subscribers. The website became a crucial tool for engaging with both local and online audiences, promoting events, and fostering community growth.
